Eastern Montana Perinatal Addiction Treatment Health System (EMPATHS)

The Eastern Montana Perinatal Addiction Treatment Health System (EMPATHS) pilot study is a system-level treatment model in which universal screening for substance use in pregnancy is implemented in the OB/GYN setting.

  • Patients screening positive for substance use concerns are referred to a centralized care manager who conducts additional Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) via live and telehealth appointments.
  • Patients are connected to behavioral health treatment services and peer and community supports to promote healthy outcomes for moms and babies.
